Plasma spray techniques provide a useful method for the deposition of metallic coatings for several applications. However, several characteristics of thermal sprayed coatings including: porosity, inhomogenous phases, and limited metallurgical bonding to the substrate can lead to a decrease in wear and corrosion resistance. As will be shown in this presentation, modification of the plasma sprayed coating structure by a high-density infrared (plasma arc) lamp can eliminate or reduce the effects of these characteristics and thus provide substantial improvements in performance. The effects of plasma arc lamp parameters on the modification of the structures of five FeMoB-based coatings were investigated as well as the effects of coating structure on wear and corrosion resistance.
