ABSTRACT ud udAnggraini Puspitasari, 2007. SYNTHESIS OF CHITOSAN SULFATE FROM udSNAIL (Achatina fullica) SHELL AND IT’S APPLICATION AS REMAZOL udYELLOW FG 6 DYE ADSORBENT. Thesis. Department of Chemistry. udMathematic and Science Faculty. Sebelas Maret University. ud ud Synthesis of chitosan sulfate from snail (Achatina fullica) shell and its udapplication as Remazol Yellow FG 6 dye adsorbent has been studied. This udexperiment was conducted to study the effectiveness of chitin from snail shell to udbe converted into chitosan sulfate and to study the optimum condition of Remazol udYellow FG 6 dye adsorption by chitosan sulfate and to determine the type of udadsorption. ud Isolation of chitin from Achatina shell was done by deproteination and uddemineralization process. Chitin had been converted into chitosan using uddemineralization process. Chitosan sulfate was made by reacting chitosan with 0,1 udM ammonium sulfate solution. The adsorption of Remazol Yellow FG 6 dye udsolution by chitosan sulfate were conducted in Batch method, by variating pH udsolution, dye solution concentration and time of interaction. Characterizations of udthe chitosan are involving determination of water and mineral content, molecular udweight, polymerization degree, and degree of deacetylation. Characterization of udchitosan sulfate are involving moisture content, ash content and sulfate content. udFunctional group of chitin, chitosan and chitosan sulfate were determined by udFTIR spectroscopy. The adsorption of dye by chitosan sulfate were analyzed with udUv-Vis spectroscopy. Type of adsorption was determined with desorption test. ud The result showed that rendement of chitin, chitosan and chitosan sulfate udwere 24,39%, 6,46% and 5,46%. The moisture content of chitosan and chitosan udsulfate were 0,93% and 1,50%. The ash content of chitosan and chitosan sulfate udwere 95% and 93,51%. The degree of deacetilation of chitin and chitosan were 28 ud– 70% and 58 – 75%. The molecular weight of chitosan was 974,87 g/mol. Sulfate udcontent in chitosan sulfate were 14,26 mg/g. The optimum condition of Remazol udYellow FG 6 dye adsorption by chitosan sulfate was pH 4, concentration 20 ppm udand the interaction time 15 minutes with adsorptive capacity 0,66 mg/g. 47,86% udRemazol Yellow FG 6 released during the desorption test, showed that the udadsorption is reversible.
