Theudcultural context is the result of local tradition for thousands of years which taughtudits followers to reveal all things not directly and more emphasis on non-verbaludcommunication. Japan is one of this cultural context follower. Where high-contextudcultures are represented in a cinematographic work of Hollywood film productionudtitled The Last Samurai.udThe Last Samurai told the story of Japanese life during modernization inudthe era of Emperor Meiji. In this film, there is a conflict between the samurai whoudwant to preserve the traditional culture of Japan with the reign of Emperor Meijiudwho adopt western progress and its cultures as a whole. The values of Japaneseudculture are trying maintained by the Samurai is represented in various forms ofudlocal customs and traditions that are part of non-verbal communication.udThe purpose of this research is to know what kind of non-verbaludcommunication symbols which represents Japanese culture in The film The LastudSamurai and also the meaning contained in it. This research is part of a qualitativeuddescriptive study using semiotic analysis based on Roland Barthes approachudcontained in the book written by Alex Sobur Communication Semiotics (2004).udThe results of this study showed that non-verbal symbols in The LastudSamurai represented High Context Culture in Japan hich are applied in Bushidoudvalues. The values are part of the Samurai’s codes. Where in such high contextudculture, further highlight the importance of the dignity, honor and distinction ofudsocial status. In terms of quantity, the largest representation category is dominatedudby Kinesic as non-verbal symbol followed by the Procsemic and Paralingualisticudcategories.udSuggestions from this study is the individual as part of a nation and localudculture should be prudent when they adopted the technological advances of otherudnations who also simultaneously brought its native culture. The goal is to makeudevery individual doesn’t lose and forgets their native cultures because it is a formudof true identity as a human being, groups and nations.
