IMPROVING THE STUDENTS’ READING SKILL USING COLLABORATIVE STRATEGIC READING MODEL

Collaborative Strategic Reading Model (CSRM) is an approach, strategy, method or model in reading that informs the learners/students how to comprehend a text using four units namely: Preview, Click and Clunk, Get the Gist and Wrap Up.The goals of CSRM are to improve reading comprehension and increase conceptual learning in ways that maximize students’ involvement. This article refers to a Classroom Action Research about improving reading skill through CSRM conducted at a High School in Slogohimo, Wonogiri, Central Java.The research is conducted in two cycles. The procedure of the research consists of identifying problem, planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, and reflecting the result of the research. The qualitative data were analyzed using Constant Comparative Method (CCM) from observation, questionnaire, interviews, and document analysis of the students’ work. The quantitative data were analyzed using a descriptive statistics describing the highest, the lowest, and the mean scores from the pre-test, regular assessment and the post-tests. The finding of the research shows using CSRM (1) can improve the students’ reading skill in terms of: (a) literal; (b) interpretive; (c) critical; and (d) creative understanding. (2) There are strengths and the weaknesses of using collaborative strategic reading model in reading class. Since using CSR has succeeded in improving the students reading skill, it is suggested that the English teacher s to (1) use CSR model as one of the strategies to improve students’ reading skill; (2) facilitate students to practice CSR model in reading class; (3) be a facilitator or motivator not an instructor, so he or she does not dominate the class .udKey words : Collaborative Strategic Reading, reading skil, classroom action research
