Writing in the 2004 Competency-Based Curriculum of English for Senior udHigh School, is one of the English language skills that should be taught udintegratedly in a continum sequence with listening, speaking, and reading skills to udgain communicative competence. It is taught for the purpose of achieving literacyud(Wells, 1987). Literacy here means the use of socially, historically, and culturallysituated practices of creating and interpreting meaning through a text (Kern, 2000: ud221). Thus, writing is intended to be taught at senior high schools for the purpose udof giving students discourse competencies to participate in creating text for udaccessing knowledge (MGMP Sukoharjo, 2006: 14).
