Survival and persistence: a case study of four provincial press sites

Pioneering provincial newspapers in New South Wales experienced an ephemeral existence. After cautious beginnings in the 1840s, the spread of provincial titles was accelerated by the gold discoveries and related population influxes of the second half of the nineteenth century. This study examines the development of the provincial press in NSW in this period, and the emergence of competition. The special focus is survival. The author examines the surviving titles in four major provincial centres which were newspaper sites before 1860 and shows that continuity of proprietors and editors contributed to the survival of a newspaper title, especially in the face of competition.
