Antibiotic versus nonantibiotic products for the treatment of Papillomatous Digital Dermatitis (hairy heel wart) in dairy cattle

A field trial was conducted to compareoxytetracycline to three nonantibiotic therapiesusing bandage protocols for the treatmentof hairy heel warts. Affected feet werebandaged for 4 days with either of the fourproducts. Over a 28-day period followingbandage removal, heel warts on 44 cows (11per treatment group) were evaluated basedon size, degree of pain, color, and lesionappearance. No differences were detectedamong treatments, suggesting that nonantibiotictherapies used in bandage protocolsmay be as effective as oxytetracycline.
