This work emphasizes the popularity of social networks as viable services to be applied in academic libraries. We present the benefits and opportunities of Web 2.0 and online communities. The choice of social networking site in which to attend is aimed through a series of guidelines. Aiming to achieve a quality tool is recommended a work plan that includes a series of steps that every librarian should uphold. Through a list and description of criteria explains how to present, from a professional standpoint, the content in a network. It highlights the essential role of librarians in academic area as capable professionals to optimize a fashionable technological resource.
