摘要

Free software, known also as Open Source software, has a number of advantages for implementation in libraries. It offers free and full source code of the software that can be used to correct errors, modify it and integrate with other programs. Because of these advantages, free software offers better opportunities for libraries as closed software. Library management systems will soon be available and can be a real alternative to commercial software. The methodology used to develop the open software, decentralized groups of developers, can also be applied to LIS research and development.
