The term knowledge organization systems (KOSs) means schemas of various kinds, that organize information and support knowledge management in various environments and for various purposes. The most representative areas of contemporary research and implementation of KOSs in networked environment are digital libraries, Internet and intranet systems and services of various organizations and the Semantic Web project. The KOSs applied in those systems include tools that range from relatively simple controlled vocabulary lists to taxonomies, classification and categorization schemes, thesauri, semantic networks and ontologies. In the article the basic features common to all kind of KOSs are indicated, and the most important types of the systems are discussed.
