Report on the use of the impact factor to evaluate scientific publications. The article presents the guidelines for habilitations at 8 medical faculties in Germany (Homburg/Saar, Kiel, Magdeburg, Münster, Ulm) and Austria (Graz, Innsbruck, Vienna) .
