Despite the existence of many standards for bibliographic data formats (UNIMARC, USMARC, etc.) and communication protocols for library automation systems (Z39.50, ILL), problems such as multilingual data management, data interchange of different implementations of the same bibliographic standard still exist. Theses problems limit the library systems connectivity and interoperability thus impacting library communication and cooperation in general. udThe special character set used by the Greek language and its unreliable customized integrations with other characters sets, the use of different implementations of the same bibliographic format standard (ISO 2709) by the various library automation systems (no common framework exist) exacerbates the above mentioned problems. The acceptance and the implementation of new standards (such as UNICODE) to the already used systems and the creation of specific tools for bibliographic data conversion between the various data formats is the only way to achieve library automation systems' compatibility and communication, in national and international level. "Which new standards should be implemented?", "What is the lowest implementation level for the existing standards?", "What specific tools are required for libraries to be able to cooperate independently of the bibliographic data format they use?", are some of the main questions we have to answer in order to be able to achieve a basic level of library interoperability with the systems they use. udA demonstration of how NDC's integrated library automation system (ABEKT) implements these standards, the procedures and specific tools that help and promote the Bibliographic data and library interoperability, will be presented.
