Estudio químico y parasitológico de muestras fecales del oso Andino (Tremarctos ornatus) provenientes de 2 reservas ecológicas, 2 zoológicos y un centro de rescate en el Ecuador

The Andean Bear (Tremarctos ornatus), is the only one amongst its species found in South America, and currently listed as an endangered species. Studies have been conducted, however, very little is known about this species. For example, which type of parasites they present, or the chemical composition of its feces. In order to clarify these questions, the present study tries to analyze stool samples collected from the population of Spectacled Bears living in Maquipucuna (n=6), Hacienda Zuleta (n=9), Zoologico de Quito en Guayllabamba (n=4), Zoologico San Martin (n=4), and Ilitío rescue center (n=4). In the samples subjected to simple flotation test, the following parasytes were observed: Ancylsotoma spp, Coccidia spp, Ascaris spp, and Entamoeba spp. In turn, the results of the chemical analysis, made with the nonparametric chi - square distribution, showed that there is no significant difference in the composition of the food diets given in captivity, as the one the bears obtain in the wild. Except from the energy parameter, which may be influenced by the consumption of aguacatillo in the Maquipucuna reserve.
