The practice of breastfeeding is a very important process for the infant and, up tosix months, is the only food needed since it provides all the substances and nutrientsrequired in order for an optimal growth. After this age, food introduction should begin inan appropriate way and breastfeeding could continue for up to two years of age. If theserecommendations are followed, the mother and the child will enjoy health, economic andpsychological benefits. The data reported for an inadequate practice of breastfeeding isalarming. The status reported by the State of the World's Children issued by the UnitedNations Fund for Children (UNICEF), shows that nearly two out of five children receiveexclusive breastfeeding and one in four children have continued breastfeeding until they accomplish the second year of life. (UNICEF, 2007).
