This report describes the development and operation of a prototype for automatically detecting the parking spot state in the ‘zona azul’ that is deployed in Quito. The prototype consists of a USB camera coupled to a servo motor, which allows the camera to acquire different parking spots images by rotating. Both the servo motor and the camera are connected to a MyRIO device from National Instruments. This device works in real time by controlling the camera and the servo motor to acquire and process images in order to perform two tasks: segmentation and comparison of the images.The segmentation process, identifies the position of each parking lot on a panoramic image, and it is performed only once after the prototype is placed in a fixed location, this should be a pole or a high place. This process determines the number of parking lots that are within the visual range obtained by combining the use of the camera and the servo motor, and obtains the coordinates of the pixels in length and width of each of the parking lots that are detected, this will allow us to crop the image and compare parking lots one by one and determine their individual status.The comparison step is performed continuously and in real time. This process takes the data obtained during the segmentation and acquires images of the parking spots, then crops it and compares the images obtained in a previous iteration of the comparison process. By comparing the images it determines whether its status has changed or not.The information obtained from the comparison is stored in an array that is transmitted to an SQL server and this information is added to a database, which is used to display the information about the status of the parking spaces in a web page.
