A restrospective cohort study was performed on a total population of 2,589 patients who were admitted to Hospital Vozandes Quito during the period of 2005 to 2010 with the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. The hospital stay for patients undergoing open appendectomies was significantly longer (2.8 ± 2.0 days) than for patients undergoing laparoscopic appendectomies (2.3 ± 1.7 days). On the contrary, laparoscopic appendectomies took significantly longer (49.1 ± 18.7 min) than open appendectomies (39.4 ± 17.0 min). The intraoperative and post-surgical mortality was 0%. A normalhistopathological result was found in 13.6% of all the appendectomies. It was observed that throughout the years the tendency of using the laparoscopic procedure increased as the number of open procedures decreased.
