Along the years, construction industry has been in a constant growth, which has had as a consequence that, every time, designer seek to plan bigger and more important structures, but that they have little economical impact without having their efficiency compromised. For this reason, one of the methods that arise from this need is using composite elements, steel with concrete, mainly in columns. Throughout this document, a compilation of the principal international codes that control this method of design. A comparative design, for a building with 6 floors, normal occupancy, and level difference of 2.80m, a selection of elements for two different types of structures is used in this analysis, one with its elements design only in steel, and the other one using composite members. Code AISC 360-10 is used in the design, since there is no local code for it. Finally, a comparison in weight and cost for the designed elements is made.
