The pain, that unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with a real or potential tissue damage today remains as one of the main reasons for investigation by the medical community.In recent years there has been a rapid progress in understanding the neurophysiological mechanisms involved in nociception or the capacity to feel pain, its physiopathology and pharmacologic treatment of pain.There are 4 different processes involved in the physiology of pain: transduction, transmission, modulation and perception, each of these steps or stages are targets for analgesic treatment. For this reason the assessment and treatment of pain requires a thoroughly and exhaustive attention.Postoperative pain has a major impact in the health care, it affects every single patient and for proper management, it should involve medical staff and even family members.
