Educación médica de postgrado evaluación del cumplimiento de los estándares globales estipulados por la WFME en los programas de postgrado en la carrera de medicina impartidos en los distintos hospitales de la ciudad de Quito que han iniciado desde el año 2010 hasta 2014

Introduction: Medical education has seen important changes in recent decades. In2001 the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) developed a project onInternational Standards in Medical Education for Basic Medical Education,Postgraduate Medical Education and Continuing Professional Development. The aimof the WFME is not to promote uniformity of educational programs, but ensure thequality of medical education.Objective: Evaluate the accomplishment of the WFME basic global standards inpostgraduate medical education programs taught in different Hospitals of Quito duringthe period 2010-2014.Methodology: This descriptive study applied the resident survey designed byACGME, to medical residents enrolled in a specialty postgraduate program. A sampleof 50 medical doctors randomly selected from Eugenio Espejo Hospital, EnriqueGarcés Hospital, de los Valles Hospital, San Francisco de Quito Hospital, ArmyHospital and Metropolitano Hospital was obtained.Results: We found the postgraduate medical education programs of Quito, arecompliant with the WFME basic standards in the seven areas studied. These areaswere Faculty/Hospital, Evaluation, Program Organization, Resources, Patient Safety,Teamwork and Duty hours. Areas with the lower rate of compliance were Evaluation,Program Organization and Patient Safety. About 40% of participants rated theirpostgraduate program as a Neutral Experience. The 32% and 20% of participantsconsidered it as a Good Experience and Best Experience, respectively. Only 6% ofparticipants rated their program as a Negative Experience.Conclusions: Postgraduate Medical Education programs taught in Hospitals of Quitoare compliant with the WFME International Standards for Medical Education.However, the accomplishment of some standards is unsatisfactory, which implies thatit is necessary to make corrections to achieve quality in postgraduate programs
