The burnout syndrome is a well-defined clinical entity that has attracted increasing volumes of research throughout the world, a direct consequence of chronic personal stress that appears in professionals that provide intensive and prolonged care to persons in conditions of necessity or dependence. This syndrome has a tridimensional component characterized by emotional fatigue, depersonalization and reduced index of personal accomplishment. The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of the syndrome in last year medical students and residents that fulfill the diagnostic criteria for burnout syndrome. By means of an analytical cross sectional study we measured the investigated syndrome in 125 subjects in the following hospitals: Metropolitano de Quito (HMQ), Carlos Andrade Marin (HCAM), Vosandez de Quito (HVQ).
