It is known that since the beginning of formal education, children have a long term for developing their abilities of reading and writing, and these abilities relate to both reading comprehension and awareness of texts, whatever they are. This Metatextual Awareness, according to Jean-Émile Gombert (1992), comprises coherence, cohesion and text structure, is a factor that can determine a good comprehension, as well as abstract writing. These are the correlations that we intended to find in this work, by using this author‟s theoretical support. Thus, this thesis deals with the relations among metatextual awareness, reading comprehension and narrative abstract writing by 5 and 6 grade students of public schools, in Porto Alegre. Tests of Metatextual Awareness (MA), Narrative Abstract (NA), and Reading Comprehension (RC) were carried out. Then the scores of these three aspects were related so that we could find their correlations. We found weak and average correlations. Furthermore, we applied questions to teachers and parents about students‟ performances in reading and writing, and family habits of reading and writing, and parents‟ education. As for the mains aspects addressed in this thesis, our concern was also to make qualitative analyzes of these variables and perhaps to inspire language teachers to approach their work by joining aspects of metatextual awareness, reading comprehension and abstract writing by students, aiming at more balanced performances in text reading and writing.
