The objective of this work is to propose an automatic programming system for infusion pumps using the radiofrequency identification technology (RFID), aiming its integration to the Hospital Information System (HIS). In a hospital routine mistakes may occur on an infusion therapy due to missing or wrong information and also programming errors. These mistakes may cause serious harm to the patient health. Mistakes may occur at any time during the information flow beetween the medical prescription and the infusion therapy delivered to the patient. An eletronic prescription module was developed to manage and store infusion therapy medical prescriptions. This module is web based to allow its utilization in anywhere int the hospital since a local network connection is avaiable. The module will serve as the hospital information system. In this project, we developed a module to write to the RFID label all the necessary parameters to program the infusion pump, integrated to the hospital information system. This module can connect to the database, obtain a list of intravenous therapy prescriptions and show them to the operator. The selected prescription data are translated to the necessary programming parameters to the infusion pump that are written on a RFID label. This label is affixed to the syringe that contains the prescribed drug. To improve this interface, it was developed a web based electronic prescription module, that manages and stores in the databank these medical prescriptions. An additional firmware was developed for the infusion pumps. This firmware enables the infusion pump to communicate with a RFID reader module, making possible reading, writing and decoding the data read from the smart label. The programming parameters are then transfered to the pump. This work is an important tool for reducing the errors occured in infusion therapy procedures in a hospital. The developed modules and firmware completes the information cycle of infusion therapy inside the hospital. They includes medical prescription and patient information(to the hospital pharmacy) and the drug admnistration on the patient.
