Color preference in clothing among Okinawa and American women. 2. Choice of clothing related to skin color, physique and age.

In this study 693 American and 729 Okinawan women were surveyed during a 5 day period in December 1962. All of these women were in their twenties and thirties. The form used during the survey was revised from a previous study. All data has been analyzed by x^2 test and correlation methods. A summary of the methodology (M) is indicated below followed by the results (R) obtained. 1. (M) Three types of Okinawan skin color were analyzed in relation to color preference in clothing as to hue, value and intensity. (R) Intensity had the most statistically significant relationship to skin color. Brown, black, grey, green and blue-purple, colors highly preferred by Okinawan women, also showed a significant relationship between choice and skin color. 2. (M) Three types of Okinawan physique were examined in relation to color preference from the standpoint of advancing-receding, and warm-cool colors. (R) As the result of analysis, the advancing-receding colors revealed some relationship with the types of physique. 3. (R) Color preference between Okinawan and American women in their twenties and thirties was similar. Almost no difference in preference could be found between the ages of Americans. 4. (R) As a whole, some difference in color preference was found to exist between Americans and Okinawans. The most contrasting difference showed up in the preference or nonpreference for brown, blue-purple, white and yellow-green. 5. (M) Data collected in a previous survey (summer, 1962) was compared with the result of this survey as to seasonal change affecting color preference. (R) Seasons have a considerable influence on the color preference of both American and Okinawan women, especially the latter. Both strongly preferred blue for summer only and black for winter.
