摘要

The subject of this project focuses on howudLandscape Architects by their profession canudexplore and directly make a difference in theudcityscape. This paper documents the process of art -udbased research practice. The purpose of installingudtemporary activities is to encourage people in theudcity to discover, participate and invite people to beudmore playful in the city.udMy experience of interaction in public spaces comesudprimarily from the education within landscapeudarchitecture, from site-specific art installations I haveudperformed in different cities and from observationsudof landscape architecture, street art and urban life inudthe cities of Vienna, Berlin and Linköping. It isudfascinating and inspiring to see how the urban spaceudcan invite and allow visitors to participate andudtherefore feel invited to the open space. As audlandscape architect I wish to create urban spacesudthat are useful and inspiring for their visitors.udThe projects main question: How can you makeudtemporary landscapes that encourage outdoorinspiredudactivities at selected locations in the city? isudanswered by practice based research, an approachudin which theoretical research are developed throughudpractical experiments in the designing- andudimplementation process. In the process theudtheoretical foundation develops into buildudsite-specific landscapes. The project has been putudtogether by different kinds of research, theudoutdoor-inspired activities has been based andudsummarized on theoretical research. The locationsudfor temporary landscape have been found throughudPhotowalks, a method used for documenting spacesudof uncertainty in the city. The designing process hasudbeen based on theory and inspiration, anduddeveloped into six designing proposals throughudfull-scale drawings and photo collages. In theudimplementation processes the proposalsudtransformed into an exhibition of temporaryudlandscape at six locations in Linköping, from the 3rduduntil the 15th of April 2012.udTemporary landscape is a momentary happening inudthe existing landscape. The method is used to createudinteresting meeting points that engage people touddiscover the site. The temporary contributionudallows people to see the city in a new way andudmakes them aware of their surroundings. It is audconcept that recognizes the human need forudexperiences and it creates opportunities to developudin the daily used environments. There are a lot ofudunused locations in the cities, usually called margins.udThese places are often perceived as a free zone, udwith possibilities to participate and to interact moreudspontaneously. To enable people to be activatedudand inspired by the cityscape, the margins and theudopen spaces has to be inviting, interesting and allowudparticipation.udConnections to outdoor delectation are used throughudthe project to transform the curiosity andudparticipation that can be experienced in the nature toudexperiences in the city. The theme Outdooruddelectation in the city summarizes the theoreticaludapproach, where the importances of discovering, udparticipation and to move more freely in the city areudbeing motivated. To explore the city is important forudpeople’s personal development, it is also anudimportant process in which people develop theirudunderstanding for the surroundings. Theudpossibilities people have to discover the urbanudsurroundings effects how well people thrive and areudconnected to their environment. Our movement isuda way to discover and learn about the city, outdooruddaily physical exercise does also have importantudeffects on our health. Our movement is influencesudby the surroundings, the cityscape are often staticudand repetitious. The city is dominated by accessibleudcommunication routes that don’t inspire us to moveudfreely or spontaneously. To become involved in theudcityscape the margins need to be inviting, udchangeable and suggest encouraging activities. udThe practice based research evolved into anudexhibition, where temporary landscapes wereudcreated at six locations in the city centre ofudLinköping. The first site was on an open lawn inudJärnvägsparken, where a Killer ball field wasudcreated by drawing white lines on the lawn. Soft ballsudwhere placed in a basket near the field. Theudsecond site was on a pedestrian and bicycle pathudalong the road Repslagaregatan. There a patternudwas fixed to the pavement and formed a route inudwhich you could jump between different boxes onudthe ground in a Motion Street. The third site was onudthe neglected square Magasintorget, smaller plant ofudspruce where planted in a wooden frame, a plank inudthe middle created a walk between the trees. On oneudedge a blackboard was places that could be drawnudon with white calk, the installation was calledudPlanned. The fourth site was places on theudtraditional square Hospitaltorget, here three chairsudout of A4 paper cartons where placed as a loungeudand formed the installation called Can you handle it.udThe fifth site was in the crossing betweenudDrottninggatan and Djurgårdsgatan. Six stoneudblocks and a pile of gravel where placed on oppositeudcorners, the object symbolized the process in whichudnatural materials are deformed and transportedudinto the city, Block to gravel. The sixth site was inudthe park area between the Cathedral and the CityudLibrary on Benzeliusplatsen, here two bookshelvesudwhere placed next to the benches, here people couldudexchange and find books in the open-air library,udExchange books.udThe exhibition of temporary landscape achievedudto encourage people to discover, participate andudbecome activated on the locations. Many peopleudbecame curious and stopped to explore the sites, udpeople played sports in the park, jumped along theudpattern at the Motion Street, left notes on theudblackboard and took a small walk through the treesudat the installation Planned, people rested on theudchairs at Hospitaltorget, discovered the blocks andudtried to go up on the gravelled pile in the trafficudjunction at Drottninggatan – Djurgårdsgatan, manyudpeople exchanged or curiously searched for books inudthe bookshelves at Benzeliusplatsen.udThe exhibition Outdoor delectation in the city was audway to encouraged people to discover, udparticipate and move more freely in the cityudmargins. The process of creating temporaryudlandscapes contains the entire process from idée toudinstalled site-specific objects. The project has alsoudshown that the method can be used to see howudlandscape architects and planners are affecting howudpeople discover and feel participation in their cityudImportant guidelines to creating and to implementudtemporary landscape in public spaces are to find audcontext to work from, to set limitations and create audframework to start from. In the project I contactedudand collaborated with the municipality and itsudcontractors, in the beginning I also defined and setudclear goals for the project which could be achievedudduring the project time and the given permissions.udExperience of practice based researched throughudthis project has shown: the importance to firstudexperience and discovering the locations where theudtemporary landscape will be created, the need toudconstantly evaluate the design proposals, to seekudexpert advice for material and construction matters.udThe most essential thing within the research is touddare and explore new ways, to constantly evolve theudproposals, to effectively make new decisions andudsee challenges as a thriving force that shapes theudideas into something better for this particularudsituation, set milestones so the project constantlyudcarries on.ud
