The interviewer in the respondent’s shoes: What can we learn of how interviewers answer survey questions?

Previous research illustrates that interviewers, to some extent intentionally or unintentionally deviate from instructions of standardized interviewing. We can get information about the way interviewers follow instructions when we ask interviewers to fill out the questionnaire that will be used in a face to face interview. We hypothesize that the way interviewers follow the instructions during their ‘task as respondent’ is related to similar behaviour of the respondent during the interview. To test this hypothesis, data from the sixth round of the European Social Survey in Belgium and interviewer data from the same questionnaire are used.
