摘要

Voltage control, grid reconfiguration andadaptive protection are considered in this paper sincethey are representative of the various controlapplications in the context of smart grids which canmake significant use of the information andcommunication technology. All the three controlapplications have multiple objectives of which some areconflicting and these call for the use of multi-­objectiveoptimization in implementing the controls. The presenceof non convex objectives and constraints calls for the useof evolutionary algorithms in solving the controlproblems. This paper enlists the generally dealtobjectives and constraints for the three controlapplications. The presence of distributed generators insmart grids brings in factors that need additionalconsideration in solving the multi-­objectiveoptimization. The paper proposes that genetic algorithmis likely to be a good optimization technique in achievingthe control objectives, the reasons for which arequalitatively described in this paper along with thechallenges in using genetic algorithm.
