The utilization of spring herring caught off the easternudGerman Baltic Sea coast in the waters aroundudRügen Island has a long tradition. Since 1991 thereudwas a dramatic decrease in herring fisheries in thisudarea. To promote the better use of this typical springudherring stock an exploratory fishery was started fromudJanuary to May 1999 accompanied by quality investigations.udThe results show the possibilities of utilizationudaccording to length distribution, fat content andudquality aspects.
