Office Building Uses Ice Storage, Heat Recovery, and Cold-Air Distribution

Ice storage offers many opportunitiesto use other tcchnologies, such as heatrecovery and cold-air distribution. Infact, by using them, the designer canimprove the efficiency and lower theconstruction cost of an ice system.This paper presents a case study of alarge (550,000 square feet) office buildingwhich combines these ideas into one HVACsystem. By integrating these technologiesto take advantage of the uniquecharacteristics of ice storage, theengineers created a system that provided a1-1/2 year simple payback. The systemreduces operating costs by over $0.16 persquare foot each year, yet it increased thenet HVAC budget by only $0.22 per squarefoot.
