In-fill housing for central city areas appearsto be an answer to the continuing need for compact,affordable dwelling unite that will improve theneighborhood environment. There exist many centralcity areas in Louisiana where lots are unusuallynarrow but zoned for residential use. As a resultof current building code improvement programs, thereare numerous vacant lots in the prime downtown locations.Owners and builders seem to be poorlyequipped to deal with the design constraints inherentin architectural proposals for contemporary housingdesign in these areas.Thin investigation considers the developmentof a case study that involves the planning and designof a compact, solar multi-family residentialunit for a central city site condition. Emphasiswill be placed on developing units that are highlyenergy conserving and have potential for one ofthree levels of passive solar technology--from asun-tempered unit to a dominant passive solar system.The case study also focuses on the optionalmix relationship between conservation options andpassive system size. The site study area, a neighborhoodin Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is distinctivein that narrow 40 x 100 feet lots predominate. Manyare vacant.
