Careful long term decisions in the design andoperation of buildings can significantly improve thethermal performance and thus reduce theconsumption of energy. The availability and ease ofuse of today's computers can be a sigruficant benefitto the decision making process of building design. In dealing with the building as a thermalsystem, the proper selection of its components andtheir relationships can be organized using a systemsapproach. This can be achieved by coupling anoptimization technique into the thermal performanceof buildings early in the design process. Thisrequires formulating the building as a well-definedthermal system in a framework suitable for theapplication of systematic approaches. The aim of thispaper is to describe the basic framework of abuilding thermal design optimization model bydefining building design variables, a criterion ofoptimality, constraints, and a suitable thermalsimulation model that can be integrated into theproper optimization technique.
