Getting Serious About Safety and Loss Prevention Emergency Power and Standby Generators

Power failures can occur for a variety of reasons.The consequences of such outages range from mereinconveniences to damaged equipment, ruined goods,lost revenue, and diminished safety.In all buildings lighting is among the greatestsafety requirements during a power outage.Depending on the type of facility, other systems andequipment may also be considered critical. Batteriesmay be used to provide power for emergency lightingas well as computers, telephone and intercomsystems. However, they are not an option forpowering large users such as HVAC systems andelevators. Backup generators are a viable solution inthese cases. They can provide electricity as long asfuel is supplied and can run virtually any typeequipment.This paper will discuss how some schools andother facilities are addressing building safety andfunctionality during power outages by using backupgenerators. Issues involving selecting, operating, andmaintaining generators will be discussed. Also,several case studies will be presented.
