Mountain Brook High School Fine Arts Center: Moisture Control Case Study

Upon returning to school in the fall, significantproblems became evident in the Fine Arts Center ofMountain Brook High School, located nearBirmingham, Alabama. In the band department,black mold was found on ceiling tiles, marching banduniforms were damaged beyond repair by mold andmildew and even sheet music that had been storedwas ruined. In the choral department, costumesworn by school choruses were badly affected by moldand mildew requiring costly cleaning. Mostsignificant, however, was the damage done to thegrand piano in the choral department by excessivemoisture in the air. Estimated overall costs due tothe moisture-related damage to the Fine Arts Centerwere estimated to be between $35,000 and $45,000.The conventional air conditioning system was notsufficient to control the humidity levels in thisbuilding. A new solution had to be found.
