There are a number of methods used toestimate the effectiveness of air conditioningequipment in handling loads. Full hourlycomputer simulations are probably the mostaccurate, but lack flexibility and are morecumbersome to use than more compactapproaches. Alternately, some form of binnedweather data has been used with load andperformance estimation carried out for each ofthe bin weather conditions. The most commonbinning method puts weather into bins of drybulb temperature with mean coincident wet bulbtemperatures.Mean coincident humidity terms lose theextreme humidity levels that commonly exist.This can lead one to assume that conditions willbe held at all times, while in fact the humidityloads will not be met and discomfort, amongother consequences, will result. Three-dimensionalplots of the joint frequency resultsclearly illustrate problem areas.A better procedure, it will be shown, is touse a joint frequency bin data set, which putshours of occurrence into a matrix with dry bulbranges on one axis and humidity ratio ranges onthe second axis. This form of binning is easilyaccomplished if a utility like BinMaker isused to generate the binned data set.
