Energy Conservation Experiences with HVAC Systems in the High Humidity Climate, A Case History

The purpose of this paper is to discuss several commonly encountered problems associated withattempts to air condition buildings in the humidenvironment. It, first, reports observations madein the course of studying the air conditioningsystems in approximately one hundred buildings atUSMC Camp Smedley D. Butler in Okinawa, Japan.Three common problems are then discussed in somedetail.It was found that in many cases humidity considerations lead to situations which were energywasteful. In many instances this could be attributed to either design or operational errors. Themost common error found was the selection of animproper method of capacity control. Methods ofimproved capacity control are suggested and theneed for additional work is pointed out.
