This paper focuses on the issue of speckle noiseand its suppression. Firstly, the multiplicative specklenoise model and its mathematical formulation areintroduced. Then, certain de-noising methods aredescribed together with possible improvements. On theirbasis, an improvement of Kuan method (KuanS) isproposed. Performance of proposed KuanS method istested on real ultrasound images and synthetic imagescorrupted with speckle noise. PSNR, edge preservation,standard deviation of homogenous regions and SIR areused for the evaluation of quality of noise suppression.Performance of the KuanS is compared with othermethods. The KuanS method achieves satisfactory resultseven in comparison with more complex methods (SRAD,wavelet based noise suppression).
