The associations between neighborhood characteristics and the self-rated health and life satisfaction of community-dwelling older adults in China

Given community- and home- based elderly care has been gaining popularity among older adults, life satisfaction and health of the aging population have become fundamental areas for policy research and service development. However, knowledge on how neighborhood characteristics influence life satisfaction and self-rated health of older adults in China remains limited. This study aims to fill this literature gap and to examine the effects of neighborhood determinants on the life satisfaction and self-rated health considering the Chinese context. By employing hierarchical linear model, this study showed that (1) the proportion of migrants is negatively associated with life satisfaction; (2) the proportion of migrants played (2) life satisfaction models and self-rated health models are different between rural and urban older adults; (3) This research can inform policy decisions about community resource allocation and development planning.
