A vision is presented for fusing quantitativeudrequirements analysis with model-based systemsudengineering. This vision draws upon and combinesudemergent themes in the engineering milieu.ud“Requirements engineering” provides means toudexplicitly represent requirements (both functional andudnon-functional) as constraints and preferences onudacceptable solutions, and emphasizes early-lifecycleudreview, analysis and verification of design anduddevelopment plans. “Design by shopping” emphasizesudrevealing the space of options available from which toudchoose (without presuming that all selection criteriaudhave previously been elicited), and provides means toudmake understandable the range of choices and theirudramifications. “Model-based engineering” emphasizesudthe goal of utilizing a formal representation of alludaspects of system design, from development throughudoperations, and provides powerful tool suites thatudsupport the practical application of these principles.udA first step prototype towards this vision isuddescribed, embodying the key capabilities.udIllustrations, implications, further challenges andudopportunities are outlined.
