One of the major functions of nurses is to promoteudhealth and wellness of individuals both healthy andudill. Promoting proper hand washing is the mostudbasic infection-control measure a nurse can assumeudto attain this goal. Individuals become moreudsusceptible to diseases without proper practice andudsufficient understanding of this skill. It is audchallenge for nurses to encourage the people to beudcompliant in making hand washing a necessary partudin the maintenance or improvement of their health.udThis is especially true for school-aged children,udwho are constantly exposed to the environment andudthus to bacterial and infectious agents, are at audhigher risk. Technology has widened theuddissemination of knowledge. Audio-VisualudPresentations (AVP) has made education andudlearning more easily facilitated. Education involvesudgiving information to improve knowledge about audcertain concept and Message Framing is oneudmethod. The study combined the two strategies inudpromoting hand washing.The objective of this study is to determineudwhich type of message framing through an AVP:udpositive (shows benefits and gains) or negativeud(shows risks and losses), is more effective inudpromoting proper hand washing among Grade 1udpupils. The researchers included 72 grade 1 pupilsudfrom a public elementary school to participate inudthe study through convenience and clusterudsampling. The data was gathered through a pre-testudand post-test method. In the analysis, the totaludaverage scores of the posttest of each group,udpositive message framing and negative messageudframing, was used to determine which type ofudmessage framing through an AVP is more effectiveudin teaching and promoting proper hand washing.udFurther, the paired t-test method was used touddetermine if there is a significant increase in theudaverage scores of all the students from pretest toudposttest to see if there is an improvement in theudknowledge and beliefs of students regarding properudhand washing. A 17-item Hand HygieneudQuestionnaire served as a pretest and posttest toudgather data.The findings showed that positive messageudframing through an AVP is more effective inudpromoting proper hand washing among Grade 1udpupils. Positive message framing group showed a higher posttest average and indicates better understanding and improved knowledge about proper hand washing.This result of this study will help nurses as well as teachers and other health care professionals in applying a new strategy inudpromoting health and wellness among their clients.
