It is hypothesized that some common multiple-choiceintelligence tests exhibit the property thatthe correct answer and the distractors togetherform a set of elements that, considered apart fromthe question, contain information as to which memberof the set is the correct answer. Threeformalized principles (couched in terms of settheory) are suggested, which enable the correct answerto be deduced from the answer set. The applicationof these principles to two intelligence tests isdemonstrated and an experiment that supports thehypothesis is reported.
