The Predictive Validity of Eye Movement Indices for Technical School Qualifying Test Performance

The study was designed to determine the predictivevalidity of a series of eye scan indices, collectedduring analogical reasoning, with respect to technicalschool qualifying test performance. The scanpatterns of 11 male Navy recruits were recordedduring solution of 12 items taken from the 1962Advanced Progressive Matrices. Significant positiverelationships with performance on the Armed ForcesQualifying Test were identified for (1) the percentageof the total number of fixations occurringwithin the main stimulus array prior to the first excursionto the distractor field; (2) the proportion oftotal row scans to binary row scans; and (3) theproportion of total column scans to binary columnscans. Significant negative relationships with qualifyingtest performance were identified for (1) thenumber of excursions from a point in the stimulusarray to a point in the distractor field and (2) thetotal number of fixations. Results are discussedwithin the framework of employing indices of cognitiveprocesses to develop selection and trainingprocedures from an individual differences perspective.
