This intervention closed the debate on the issue of inheritance and, although not approved because it did not win the vote of the majority of the delegates, it received 32 votes in favour, 23 in opposition and 13 abstentions. Mikhail Bakunin, MikhailBakunin 1814–76, one of the leading exponents of anarchism, joined the IWMA in 1869 and was a delegate to the Basel Congress the same year. Expelled in 1872, he was one of the progenitors of the ‘autonomist’ IWMA. Originally published in B1869, the text is also found in PI, II: 94–5.
