A framework for damage mechanics of concreteudis applied to simulate the non-linear elasticuddeformation behavior of concrete usingudfinite element method (FEM). A rather simpleudisotropic damage model containing essentiallyudno adjustable parameters is shown to produceudresults in remarkably good agreement with sampleudexperimental data: the damage law requiresudonly the fracture energy to be defined completely.udThe model is achieved by introducing auddamage surface that is similar to the yield functionudin the conventional theory of plasticity. Audspecial form of damage surfaces is constructedudto illustrate the application of the model. A newuddamage criterion, defined as an equivalentudstrain norm, is proposed, in order to take intoudconsideration the asymmetric behavior of concrete.udFor verifying the FEM program includingudthe model, deformations predicted by thisudmodel are compared with both the experimentaludones for the concrete structural model andudthe ones calculated without application of theudcontinuum damage mechanics.
