The paper provides a critical review of the development of udinformation center through different phases, transformation of the udinformation center in response to the inter-disciplinary imperatives udof information and knowledge management, IT imperatives, trends udin the areas of content, services, management, and personnel, udand future possibilities and prospects. An extensive review of udliterature was made in order to discern trends and analyze the udcurrent situation in pertinent areas focused in this paper. It was udnoted that the information center has changed through different udphases. Information and knowledge management have made a uddistinct impact on the dynamics of the center. Changes in udresources and services, IT applications, user community, and udmanagement practices are most evident. These factors have been udcritical in shaping the identity and substance of the information udcenters. Based on this analysis, challenges facing the information udcenters have been elaborated. Best practices in specific areas in udthe developed nations have been highlighted. Future of the udinformation center is projected to be dynamic, enterprising, and udchallenging. This review is useful for taking strategic cues for udplanning and managing the information centers.
