This paper presents a nondestructive corrosion damageuddetection method for reinforced concrete structures based onudthe analysis of the electromagnetic signature of the steel rebar corrosion.udThe signature of the corrosion on the scattered field uponudmicrowave illumination is first numerically analyzed. First-orderudquality factor parameters, the energy and the mean propagationuddelay, are proposed to quantify the corrosion amount inudthe structure. To validate the model, low-profile ultra-wide-bandudantennas (3–12 GHz) are fabricated and measured. Measurementsudon 12 reinforced concrete samples with induced corrosion areudperformed, using three different antenna setups. The experimentsuddemonstrate a good correlation between an increase in the corrosionudamount with a decrease in the energy and an increase in theudtime delay of the propagated signal.
