This panel paper sets out to discuss what self-adaptationudmeans, and to explore the extent to which currentudautonomic systems exhibit truly self-adaptive behaviour.udMany of the currently cited examples are clearlyudadaptive, but debate remains as to what extent they areudsimply following prescribed adaptation rules within presetudbounds, and to what extent they have the ability toudtruly learn new behaviour. Is there a standard test thatudcan be applied to differentiate? Is adaptive behaviourudsufficient anyway? Other autonomic computing issues areudalso discussed.
