We have almost certainly all experienced an awkward interaction with someone from another culture; a strained conversation which leaves both parties with a negative impression of the other. If one party does not speak the other's language very well, cultural misunderstandings are allowed for; ironically, the more proficiently the other speaks our language, the less forgiving we are of what we perceive to be interactional errors.
