The study of information retrieval has increased in interest and importance with the explosive growth of onlineudinformation in recent years. Learning about information retrieval within formal courses of study enables usersudof search engines to use them more knowledgeably and effectively, while providing the starting point for theudexplorations of new researchers into novel search technologies. The nature of information retrieval as a topicudalso makes it an ideal subject for developing a range of interdisciplinary and transferrable skills in thoseudstudying it.
