Clinical Study on the Effect of Chlorhexidine Mouth Rinse in Improving Oral Health in Orthodontic Patients with Fixed Appliancesudud

During orthodontic treatment, there is increased risk of periodontal disease and caries. Treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances leads to the prolonged accumulation of dental plaque. Patients are at risk because they may develop gingival inflammation and enamel demineralisation during treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of chlorhexidine rinsing solution on plaque and gingival bleeding and compare the efficiency in preventing demineralization in orthodontic patients with fixed appliances. This study included 40 patients witch were divided in to control group (brushing) and an experimental group (brushing + chlorhexidine mouth rinse). The parameters used are dental plaque index (DPI), index of gingival inflammation (IGI) and WSL index.udPlaque index and gingival inflammation scores shows statistically significant differences (p≤ 0.05), among two groups for each of the three time points. In this study, at the subjects of examine group (preventively treated underway of orthodontic treatment) has been registered statistically significant decreased WSL one month after WSLs and after three months WSLs of treatment.udTherefore, adding chlorhexidine mouth rinse to the daily oral hygiene regimen reduces plaque and gingivitis development in orthodontic patients. It is recommended that orthodontist instruct their patients to rinse once daily with chlorhexidine mouth wash in addition to daily brushing. ud
