In timber drying, VOC emissions have negative impacts on human health and environment and, therefore, should be controlled under certain level. In this work, a new instrument called SIFT-MS (Selected Ion Flow Tube--Mass Spectrometer) was tested and used for detection of the timber drying emissions. The results showed that the SIFT-MS is an accurate technique and its portable version, which is being developed, will be a useful measurement device. By using this instrument, compounds and levels of the emissions were measured at different drying stages for five drying schedules with drying temperature from 70 to 120°C.
