This study is a pioneering evaluation of a New Zealand teachers’ college curriculum, namely the 1973 one-year pre-service primary teacher education programme at Christchurch Teachers’ College for university graduates. It comprises an historical survey of the course in that College, together withother antecedent data, an analysis of selected course transactions, and a limited follow-up of course outcomes in 1974. Nine questionnaires given to student, teacher, school principal and teachers’ college lecturer audiences were the main sources of data. The major conclusion reached concerns the attitudes of ambivalence towards the place and preparation of university graduates for the primary teaching service. A number of recommendations are made.
